What does it cost to study in New Zealand?

Accommodation

You can choose to live in either Halls of Residence, Student Hostels, Dormitories, or Private Apartments. The approximate cost for the same ranges between NZ$15000-NZ$18000.

Living Expenses

While studying in New Zealand universities you are expected to make approximate provisions of NZ$15000-NZ$18000, for avenues such as food, clothing, entertainment, transportation and accommodation. Once you decide to study in New Zealand the visa authorities expect you to make of NZ$15000 towards living expenses.

Bank Loans

If you're looking for bank loans for higher studies, these are also available in the country. Your education loan will be approved on the basis of collateral security. This collateral security can be in the form of property, insurance, fixed deposit and many other such avenues. Interest rates for the same varies from bank to bank.

Financial Assistance

You will require funds that not only cover course costs which are inclusive of books, research expenses, international literature searches and data collection. But also funds for living such as food, rent and transport. Apart from your own funds, there are several avenues through which you can attain financial assistance.

Scholarships

The New Zealand government offers scholarships to students from developing countries. There are Overseas Development Assistance (NZODA) Postgraduate Scholarships. The number of scholarships are limited in nature and your chances of attaining the same are dependent upon your academic grades.

New Zealand's International Aid and Development Agency is responsible for international assistance to students from developing countries. They provide financial as well as technical assistance that encompasses nearly everything related to education.

Employment Opportunities

As an international student enrolled in a tertiary program, you are permitted to work for 20 hours per week during the course and full time which is 40 hours during course breaks. The average amount you can expect to earn is between NZ$12-NZ$15.

After completion of your study in New Zealand you gain points under the Skilled Migrant Category through which you can apply for a grand job search visa.

Health Insurance

Some New Zealand universities have health plans initiated for international students in their program. However, this will only last for as long as your course lasts. On the other hand, there are certain institutions that will not have integrated health plans. In such a case, you will have to make provisions for yourself. Private medical plans in New Zealand may approximately cost you between NZ$200-NZ$700.

Transport Costs

As a student you are going to incur immense traveling around your university. Some New Zealand universities have shuttle services in their campuses. Apart from this, you can also use the subway, buses and trains to get around. For a long distance journey, rail, air, ferries and taxis are also convenient. Transportation costs may approximately come around NZ$ 120- NZ$250. You can also get the monthly pass called AT Hop Card for discounts.
