Revised TOEFL iBT Format Commencing July 26th, 2023

Beginning on July 26, 2023, the TOEFL iBT English language test will undergo major modifications. These changes will benefit those who take the test after July 26.

TOEFL Exam Format

The ETS-administered Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is one of the most well-liked exams for candidates wishing to. The TOEFL exam's objective is to gauge test-takers' proficiency in English in a university setting.

The TOEFL exam is divided into four sections: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. According to the current schedule, the test's four components take roughly 3 hours to complete.

The TOEFL exam schedule has been shortened by roughly two hours, and ETS (Educational Testing Service), which oversees the administration of the test, has planned a number of improvements to the TOEFL test itself that will go into effect on July 26, 2023. The improvements will not be applicable to TOEFL iBT Paper Edition tests.

 Section  Questions  Time

 Listening  28 questions  36 minutes
 Speaking  4 tasks  16 minutes
 Writing  2 tasks  29 minutes
 Total Time:- under 2 hours

What modifications will the TOEFL exam undergo in 2023?

TOEFL:- Writing

The writing task will see the most changes to the TOEFL iBT test in 2023. Instead of the "Independent Writing Task," test-takers will need to do a task titled "Writing for an Academic Discussion." Comparatively speaking, the new writing assignment is more modern. You will write a post in an online academic discussion for this assignment. You will read a discussion post by a lecturer or professor as well as responses from other students to a specific topic. Following that, you will write your own response in which you will state and defend your position. You'll have ten minutes to create a post with at least 100 words.

The current 'Integrated Writing Task' will remain unchanged.

TOEFL:- Reading

Test takers will be asked fewer questions on the reading passages. Currently, exam takers are required to provide answers to questions based on three to four reading passages. The new test structure consists of just two reading passages, each with ten questions. This implies that test-takers will be able to complete the reading in about 35 minutes.

TOEFL:- Listening

Presently, test takers listen to three to four lectures and two to three conversations before responding to questions. Starting on July 26, applicants will answer 28 questions based on three lectures and two conversations. This indicates that it will take test-takers roughly 35 minutes to complete the listening task.

TOEFL:- Speaking

The speaking section has not been altered. You will continue to have approximately 16 minutes to demonstrate your knowledge of the English language.

Benefits of the new TOEFL iBT format

The main benefit of a shorter exam duration is obvious: you won't need to focus as long. While everyone has a different attention span and level of concentration, it is clear that the less time you spend focusing on a topic, the more probable it is that you will focus effectively on that task. The time provided for Reading and Listening assignments has been significantly decreased. While some test takers might worry that they won't be able to demonstrate their proficiency in the English language, it also makes it easier to concentrate completely on the task at hand.

TOEFL Grading Scheme

To fully understand their TOEFL exam score, candidates must understand how each section of the test is assessed. Six days following the exam, ETS sends a notification to the candidates via email when the results are available. Scores for the TOEFL are available online. 11 days after the TOEFL exam date, candidates receive their printed score results via email.

 Section  Scores
 Reading  30
 Listening 30
 Speaking 30
 Writing 30
 Total 120
