Trinity College

Overview

Opened in 1872, Trinity College was established as an affiliated residential college of the University of Melbourne as well as preparing theological candidates for ordained ministry in the Anglican Church of Australia.

The College has significantly expanded since then and today consists of three divisions; the Pathways School, the Residential College and the Theological School.

Today, the College has a diverse student body of more than 2,000 students from a wide range of socio-economic, geographic and cultural backgrounds. This has created a vibrant and supportive learning community.

Trinity College embraces reconciliation and is committed to giving young Indigenous students access to tertiary study and supporting them academically, pastorally and culturally so as to build their chances of successfully completing a university degree.

Opportunities abound for all our students to explore new interests and pursue their extra-curricular passions – be they musical, sporting, cultural, spiritual, entrepreneurial, or in the areas of leadership and social responsibility. The breadth and depth of these opportunities, supported by extensive student welfare and pastoral care structures, and the diversity of students' backgrounds, nurtures the development of well-rounded individuals, able and willing to lead and serve, locally, nationally or internationally.

Location & Facilities

On entering the College’s historic main campus for the first time, many people are struck by its sense of tranquility. It stands as an oasis somewhat set apart from the hustle and bustle of the ‘real’ world, despite being situated just one–and-a-half kilometres from the city centre. Old stone buildings with ivy-clad cloisters encircle a large open expanse of lawn (known as the 'Bulpadock') fringed by large trees, including the College Oak planted in 1880.

But beneath its deceptively peaceful, stately exterior, Trinity College is a dynamic, vibrant institution, energetically pursuing a world-class education.

Trinity students find themselves immersed in an academic community where all facets of their environment – physical, intellectual, social, cultural, sporting, and spiritual – serve to inspire them to aim not just for academic achievement but for excellence in all they do.

It is an environment rich with history and tradition; where the walls are hung with an impressive collection of artworks; where students can interact with visiting academics, many of whom are world leaders in their field; and where both formal and informal discussion is encouraged and ideas flow freely

The College Chapel, itself a gem of early 20th century architecture, offers a place of worship and quiet reflection where those of all faiths and none are welcome. The Chapel is ‘home’, also to the internationally acclaimed Choir of Trinity College, whose music adds another dimension to the lively services presented by the Chaplaincy team under the leadership of the College Chaplain.

The College Dining Hall with its dark timber beams and portraits of distinguished founders, Wardens and former students is a hub of communal student life, as are the Senior and Junior Common Rooms also.

We invite you to explore all these features of Trinity College, and more.
